Uncle Shoe commissioned this instrument to be as loud as possible, have lots of room between the strings for easier fingering, and have a thick neck for better grip. It is very comfortable to play, and its dramatic ringing tone has surpassed all expectations. The 8 strings are paired in 4 courses and tuned in fifths just like a Greek or Irish bouzouki or like a mandolin tuned down an octave. This strange combination of bouzouki and banjo give this instrument a great range of tonal colors; from a snare drum like old-timey "bap" sound to a haunting ringing middle eastern shimmer. It uses a Gibson Mastertone type drum for superior volume and sustain. The mahogany neck is wide enough to accommodate the extra strings. The tastefully inlaid headstock gives a stylistic flair to the instrument without classifying it as either a banjo or a mandolin.
